Denny Doherty as the harbour master

Denny Doherty, born on November 29, 1940, Halifax, Nova Scotia, was a Canadian musician, singer, songwriter, and actor who was the storyteller for Theodore Tugboat. He was best known as the founding member and vocalist of the American-based group The Mamas and the Papas.

As production of Theodore Tugboat began, Denny Doherty was chosen as the narrator. He also played the Harbour Master and voiced all the characters. After Theodore Tugboat ended, Denny appeared in various television programs, most notably in the Season 7 finale of the showcase series Trailer Park Boys where he played a American police officer named Agent Ryan Chalkneck, which was filmed shortly before his death and dedicated to him.

Doherty passed away from kidney failure on January 19, 2007 at the age of 66.

Trivia

  • Denny Doherty was on board Theodore Too during his launch along with series creator Andrew Cochran.
  • Doherty's involvement with Theodore Tugboat is very similar to Ringo Starr's involvement with Thomas & Friends as both shows were filmed with live action models of anthropomorphized vehicles and started off narrated by musicians who were popular in the 1960s. Unlike Starr, who left Thomas & Friends after its second series, Doherty remained with Theodore Tugboat throughout the show's run.
