Theodore's Bad Dreams is the twelfth episode of the first season.

Plot

It's midnight in the Big Harbour, and all the tugs are asleep at the Great Ocean Tug and Salvage Company dock. But then there's gurgling in the water, and it's starting to foam, and it's happening in front of Theodore. Then out of the water comes a sea monster that had bat wings and scary eyes and teeth. And it looks like it's coming for Theodore. Theodore blasts his horn in fright and wakes up Emily. Theodore is terrified, but she explains that he only had a dream. Theodore doesn't quite understand about dreams and is convinced the sea monster was real. So Emily decides he gets Foduck to ask his friends at the Oceanic Institute if they are real. But Theodore doesn't go back to sleep. He was sure the sea monster was gonna come again. Then he hears George giggling in his sleep. But doesn't know why.

The next morning, Foduck and Theodore head over to Rebecca the Research Vessel and ask if there's any sea monsters. And after giving it some thought, Rebecca tells them that sea monsters don't really exist. Foduck is happy with her answer, and he and Theodore head back to their dock. But Theodore is still not convinced. Later, he is building a trap to catch the sea monster. Hank sees the trap and Theodore tells him that it will just scare the monster away. But Hank is left puzzled. That night, Theodore stays up and waits for the monster. But as the Clock Tower tolled midnight, he falls asleep. Then the water begins gurgling and bubbling and swirling. Then comes the sea monster again, and it has in anchor dangling from its mouth. And then a voice was calling Theodore's name. Emily was calling his name and nudged him awake. Theodore quickly looked for the monster, but it was gone. And he stayed awake all night long.

The next morning, Theodore and Emily are moving a ship named Gloria Cornwallis to the grain elevators. Theodore's very tired after being awake all night long and isn't paying attention. Petra blasts her horn to get Theodore to mind his course as the end of Gloria was about to collide into the Harbour Master's office. He soon apologizes and continues on, but he soon starts to drift off, and bumps into the ship's hull. Gloria blasts her horn in pain. Petra sends Theodore back to his dock. Emily knows he is upset and knows what the matter is. So she tells him that she'll stay awake with him if the sea monster comes again. But Theodore doesn't know if that's a good idea. So as night falls, Emily does stay awake, and Theodore goes to sleep. But as midnight comes, Emily falls asleep and starts snoring. Then the water starts to bubble, gurgle and foam again. And the sea monster appears in front of Theodore again, but this time has a tail that's glowing green. Theodore blasts his horn in horror and wakes up Emily. Theodore is fed up and thinks he should move to another harbour. Because sleeping where he was meant that the sea monster would keep coming. But if he did, that would mean he would never work or go out on the ocean. Then Emily hears George giggling in his sleep.

Next morning, all the tugs are going to work, but Theodore is still in his spot feeling tired and defeated. Emily asks George why he was giggling last night. George explains that he was seeing the Waltzing Sugar Plum Harbour Ferries, and they were dancing around in the dock and made him laugh. Then Emily had an idea, better than the one before, and promises Theodore that she won't go to sleep. As nighttime falls again, Theodore and Emily are awake. And George was giggling in his sleep. Emily tells Theodore that the Waltzing Sugar Plum Harbour Ferries had come. But Theodore doesn't see them. But Emily tells him that George is the only one who does. And then Theodore had a smile on his face. He realizes that George is only dreaming of the Waltzing Sugar Plum Harbour Ferries. And he soon realizes he was dreaming of the sea monster like Emily said, and heads back to his dock with a smile on his face. Emily wishes Theodore sweet dreams, and Theodore happily falls asleep after not sleeping for three days. Then he started to giggle in his sleep too.

Trivia

  • Stock footage from Theodore the Vegetable and Is Anybody Listening? and mirrored stock footage from Theodore's First Pull is used.
  • This is the only episode in the first season where the tugs have closed eyes face masks to show them sleeping. In most episodes, this was achieved by having their hats down in front of their eyes.
  • This is one of a few episodes where the Harbor Master is indirectly involved in the action of the main story. When Emily and Theodore are moving Gloria, Theodore's sleepy mood nearly causes Gloria to crash into his office.
  • This episode was filmed right before The Great Harbour Clean Up Contest as the position of some boats are the same in both episodes.
  • This episode marks Rebecca's first speaking role in the series and her only speaking role in the first season.

Goofs

  • When Theodore thinks "Now wasn't that strange?", Emily is still standing in front of him and George has stopped giggling.
