Theodore and the Homesick Rowboat is the second episode of the first season.

Plot

During the morning work meeting, the Dispatcher tells the tugs that an ocean tug had rescued a ship named Olympia all by himself last night and that the ship needs repairs. Emily, Hank and Theodore are sent to bring in the ship. Theodore and Hank are ecstatic about the story. Theodore thinks this is a good chance to show that he is ready to be an ocean tug. He soon starts to daydream about rescuing a ship by himself during a storm, but really, he was pushing Hank. As the tugs take Olympia to the harbour, Theodore is having a hard time keeping her steady. Hank offers to help, but Theodore insists he can do it himself. But then, his tow rope snaps, and the end of Olympia is drifting towards Willy's Island. Petra sees it and tells Emily and Hank to turn quickly. And they do just in time. Petra is furious at Theodore for not calling for help. And tells him that every tugboat has to work as a team. Even tugboats who want to go out on the ocean by themselves. Theodore is now feeling very sad and sorry.

Later, Theodore is getting a new tow rope, when he hears a sad mopey voice saying that no one is looking for it. Theodore sees a little rowboat stuck between some rocks. It introduces itself as R. Boat. R for row. Theodore is about to rescue him, but then he remembers he lost his tow rope because he was trying to act like an ocean tug and became sad again. Hank notices R. Boat and he rescues him. Theodore insists that he takes him home by himself. So, he borrows Hank's rope and tows R. Boat. But then he asked him where his home is. R. Boat explains that his home was washed away by a big storm. Then Theodore says he'll find him a nice new home to live. Hank offers to help too, but Theodore isn't too happy about it. And R. Boat is doubtful.

Theodore and Hank tell R. Boat about the sandy beach and has lots of clams, but R. Boat shutters at the thought of being around clams because they keep him awake with their clapping. So, Theodore takes him to the grain terminal, but R. Boat is allergic to wheat and sneezes. Hank has an idea, but Theodore ignores him. Then R. Boat sneezes again. Hank asks if he wants to blow his nose. That gave Theodore an idea. Even though he hasn't listened to Hank's. Theodore takes R. Boat to Bluenose the sailing ship. But when he sees that she has a bell, he complains that it's too noisy. Theodore doesn't listen and asks Bluenose if she needs a lifeboat. But Bluenose tells him she has plenty. Hank tries to tell Theodore where he can find a home for R. Boat, but Theodore snaps at him insisting that he can find R. Boat a home by himself. And leaves Hank behind.

The sun is beginning to set, and Theodore is running out of ideas. He honks his horn to himself, and Hank suddenly appears, much to Theodore's shock. Hank tells him about a wooden dock near the sandy beach. R. Boat tells them that he used to live at a wooden dock. So, Theodore decides to go with his idea. At the sandy beach, R. Boat looks around and asks if there's any clams. But they tell him there's oysters, and they would probably want company. R. Boat likes the sound of that as they are nice and quiet. So, he agrees to live at the sandy beach, and Theodore and Hank go back home. But Theodore is still sad because Hank saved him from the rocks and the dock was his idea. And explains that he wanted to do it himself like an ocean tug. Hank now knows why he was acting so strangely. But he tells him that he did most of the towing and told R. Boat about the oysters. And Theodore agreed that they did do it together. And Hank reminds him that's what a team does and asks him if they are a team. Theodore happily agrees that they are a team. And they head home together. But as they do, Hank asks if ocean going tugs work alone all the time. Theodore tells him he hopes not.
